Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is more nutritious than traditional produce due to the fact that it contains less harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

Are organic foods better?

According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.

Why should you buy organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

What are the most popular organic products?

Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer and better for the environment. They also make it more affordable for consumers.

They also tend to have higher prices. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to know which foods are popular today and whether trends are changing.

These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.

Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.

According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

How To

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

Organic foods are produced from plants and animals that have been grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other additives. They are not subject to genetic engineering or the use of ionizing radioactive radiation. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

In 1845, Justus Von Liebig, an aspiring chemist and entrepreneur, created the term "organic" to describe the properties found in manure. Most people associate organic with food production. Organic refers to products that only contain naturally occurring substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, which are all found in nature.

The consumption of organic foods has risen dramatically in the past decades. According to statistics, approximately 50% of the world’s population consumes at minimum one organic product each day. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.

There are many reasons consumers choose organic products. Organic products are preferred by many people for their taste and health. Some also prefer organic produce because of the higher quality. Others believe that organic farming is more sustainable. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.

While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. Organic food prices are affected by many factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another is the cost for inputs and labour required to grow organic crops. There are other factors such as transportation costs, marketing and taxes. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.

Here are some key differences between organic and traditional foods.

  • Organic produce is naturally free of synthetic fertilizers and growth regulators as well as hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals.
  • Organic livestock are fed grasses, grains and legumes rather than corn or soybean meals.
  • Organic milk is produced by cows who eat a diet consisting of pasture grasses and hay.

  • Organic meat, poultry, and seafood do not undergo radiation.
  • Before using raw nuts or seeds, they must be soaked.
