When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

Organic farming is also sustainable. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This reduces pollution and preserves valuable resources.

Organic farming is good for the environment and increases crop yields. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.

Organic farming methods can also result in higher prices for farmers' produce. People who are more conscious of the dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will eat healthier food.

How To

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.

Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
