Is organic produce healthy?

There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. Of course, there are exceptions to both categories, but for the most part, the answer to your question is yes. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.

You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Many grocery stores now stock organic food. This makes it easier to shop organic.

Organic food is also better tasting and more nutritious because it contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. In addition, organics are usually grown without applying synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which means they do not pollute our soil and water supply.

The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are over 30 million acres of US organic farmland.

Organic food can often be cheaper than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), organic food actually costs 10% less per pound. Switching to organic food is a smart move if you care about your health and that of your family.

Organic food is a popular choice to traditional American cuisines. While many believe organic food can only come from specialty markets and fine dining restaurants, it is not true. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.

Organic food sales have increased significantly in recent years. The market value of organic food in the US was $43 billion in 2012, up from $21 billion in 2007.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.

Pastured/Freerange - Products made from animals who graze freely and are outdoors.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • The animal is never given antibiotics
  • Animals are not ever given hormones.
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • There's no sewage waste sludge
  • No GMOs
  • Antibiotics have never been administered
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drug
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage solids (if it's not GMO).
  • No irradiation

What are organic food products?

Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge and confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used, and there is no animal testing. These crops are allowed natural growth, so farmers don't use chemicals to kill pests and weeds.

Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics are also better for your health as they contain more nutrients that conventional food. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What You Should Know About Organic Foods

Organic foods are plants and animals grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or additives. They are produced without genetic engineering or the application of ionizing radiation. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It cannot contain genetically modified organisms.

The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Most people associate organic with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.

Over the past decade, organic products have seen a dramatic increase in consumption. According to statistics, approximately 50% of the world’s population consumes at minimum one organic product each day. This figure is on the rise and it is predicted to grow to 70%, 88%, and 90% in 2020.

There are many reasons that organic products are chosen by consumers. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. However, there are also ethical concerns regarding the treatment of farm workers and animals, which is why some consumers opt for non-organic products.

Although organic foods tend to be more expensive than regular ones, prices can vary depending on where they are located. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. There are other factors such as transportation costs, marketing and taxes. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.

These are the main differences in organic and conventional food.

  • Organic produce is completely free from chemicals, hormones and antibiotics.
  • Organic livestock is fed a diet based on grasses and grains rather than corn and soybean meals.
  • Organic milk comes from cows fed only grasses and hay.
  • All raw materials used in organic manufacturing are certified organic.
  • Organic fruits or vegetables should not be grown in pesticide- or other harmful chemical environments.
  • No irradiation is used in organic meat, poultry, or seafood.
  • It is important to soak any raw nuts and seeds prior to use.
  • Only healthy oils are used in organic cooking.
  • Organic eggs were laid by hens. They can also be used in outdoor areas.
  • Bees use traditional methods to extract organic honey.
  • Organic chocolate uses sugar and beans that have been grown and processed organically.
  • Organic wines are produced without the use of chemical additives.
