Frequently Asked Questions

Are organic foods healthy?

There are two types of foods; those we grow ourselves and those we buy from someone else. Of course, there are exceptions to both categories, but for the most part, the answer to your question is yes. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.

You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Many grocery stores now stock organic food. This makes it easier to shop organic.

Organic food is better tasting and healthier because it contains more vitamins and minerals. Organics can be grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This ensures that organics do not pollute our soil or water supply.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices and requires farmers to follow strict guidelines to ensure that organic produce is safe to eat. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.

As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), organic food actually costs 10% less per pound. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.

Organic food is a popular choice to traditional American cuisines. Many people believe that organic food can only be found in specialty markets or gourmet restaurants. This is false. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in organic food sales. In 2012, the US market value for organic food was $43 Billion. This is an increase of $21 Billion from 2007.

How do I know if my produce is organic?

These three labels are essential if you want to be certain that you are purchasing organic produce.

USDA Organic Certified - Produce certified by the USDA as being 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free Range - Produce from animals who live outdoors and graze freely on grass and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • There are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • The animal is never given any hormones
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage sludge
  • GMOs prohibited
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
  • No irradiation

Are organic foods healthier?

According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

Statistics

  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

5 Reasons to buy organic products

Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They contain no genetically modified or irradiated food ingredients. They do not use industrial solvents or sewage effluent in their production. During the course of its growth cycle, the natural environment of the food is protected from contamination. It is free of preservatives as well as artificial additives. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics. They are also made in conditions that maintain their nutritional value and freshness for longer times.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals that nonorganic. This makes it less likely to cause allergies or sensitivities. It also means you're consuming fewer toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizer needs very little water. Organic farms are located far from cities where there is a lot of pollution, because they require so much energy to grow. This helps reduce pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility, rather than chemical fertilisers. This results in healthier soils and higher levels organic matter. It is better for soil health to rotate crops and allow the land to fallow regularly. When farm animals eat only grasses and grains raised without any added hormones or antibiotics, they develop strong immune systems.
  4. Taste. Due to being picked at peak quality, vegetables and fruits are often bland. Organic produce is sweeter and richer because it was harvested at the peak of its ripeness.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs are harmful chemicals found in many conventional processed foods. Avoid these harmful chemicals by eating whole foods, such as meat, eggs and fish, seeds, legumes, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and beans.
