Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of organic farming?

Organic farming gives farmers the opportunity to grow food without the use of chemical pesticides. Farmers don't need to worry that harmful pesticides could harm their crops or animals.

Organic farming also permits for the use of natural fertilizers. These fertilizers are good for plants that are healthy and reduce chemical waste.

Organic farming is also sustainable. Farmers often use composting techniques to recycle nutrients back into the soil. This reduces pollution and conserves valuable resources.

Organic farming is good for the environment and increases crop yields. This is because organic farming requires less water to grow the crops.

Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. Consumers who are more informed about the dangers of pesticides or chemical fertilizers will demand healthier food.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is gaining popularity because of these reasons.

Are organic foods healthier?

According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

Organic means it is free from pesticides?

Organic food is free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This means that organic foods are not subject to chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Because it is free from harmful additives, organic produce has higher nutritional value than conventionally produced food.

The USDA National Organic Program, (NOP), requires farmers to adhere to strict guidelines when cultivating organic crops.

These guidelines address soil preparation, crop rotations, pest control, water conservation, harvesting, and other practices.

Organic farming techniques also contribute to healthy ecosystems that benefit wildlife as well as natural habitats.

Statistics

  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
