Frequently Asked Questions

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.

Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. Organic foods reduce pollution in rivers, lakes and landfills. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

Buy organic meats whenever possible. This is the best way for you to eat healthy, organic meats. Buying local helps keep more money circulating within the community rather than going out of state. Local businesses often offer discounts to their customers by shopping locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

Does organic mean that it is not sprayed with pesticides?

Organic food is chemical-free and grown without pesticides. This means that organic food is often free of pesticides and fertilizers.

Because it is free from harmful additives, organic produce has higher nutritional value than conventionally produced food.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), requires that farmers follow strict guidelines when growing organic crops.

These guidelines cover soil preparation, crop rotation and pest control. They also include water conservation and harvesting techniques.

Organic farming methods are also beneficial for wildlife and natural habitats.

Are organic foods better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

What is inorganic?

Organic food is not produced with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food is free from harmful substances like pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.

Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. According to the National Organic Program Standards all organic food must be free of banned materials such as antibiotics growth hormones genetically modified organisms GMOs, and industrial solvents. Organic food must be grown without the use of toxic chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.

Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organics are also better for your health as they contain more nutrients that conventional food. Organic products tend to be higher in fiber and lower fat than conventionally produced foods.

How can you tell if your produce is organic?

These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.

USDA Organic Certified - Produce certified by the USDA as being 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free Range - Produce from animals who live outdoors and graze freely on grass and herbs.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • The animal is never given any hormones
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage effluent
  • GMOs prohibited
  • Never was an antibiotic given
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage solids (if it's not GMO).
  • No irradiation

I hope you found this article helpful.

Why should organic be my first choice?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.

Statistics

  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

How to save money on organic meat

In this post, I'll share tips and tricks on buying organic meat without breaking your bank account.

You will learn where to buy cheap organic meats, and what they cost per pound. You will learn how to make the best out of what you purchase.

For healthy eating, you don’t have to spend a lot. Sometimes, you have to use your creativity to save money while still eating well. Here are some ways you can cut down on food expenses while still getting the best from organic meat.

  1. Shop at wholesale clubs - Sams Club or Costco are great places to buy bulk foods such as chicken breasts and pork chops. You can often find deals on large quantities (up to 50 pounds) if you live close to one of these stores. This way you won't end up with any leftover meat. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. Amazon offers Prime Pantry weekly deals, including free shipping for orders above $35 You can get discounts on ground beef, beef roasts, lamb steaks and pork loins. It's simple to visit their website to view the latest offerings at different times.
  3. Local farmers often charge less than big box retailers due to the fact that they don't have large overheads for stocking their shelves. Plus, they know exactly what their animals ate and drank, so they know exactly what's inside their bodies.
  4. Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. Therefore, choose the leanest cuts. These include sirloin, tenderloin, top round, flank, and top-round steaks. These cuts are low in fat and high-protein.
  5. Try new recipes - Don't be afraid to try new things! Start cooking with ingredients that you have never used before. This is one of the easiest ways reduce your grocery costs. You'll be surprised at how many delicious dishes can you create using fresh tomatoes.
  6. Use leftovers to create new recipes. Remaining meat can be used for quick lunches or dinners.

So, there you are! That's my list of tips on how to afford organic meat even though you're on a budget. Do you have any other tips? Have any other tips for me about where to buy cheap meat?
