Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.

This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.


What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require that operations are audited annually to verify compliance with the strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
