Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top organic products?

Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer and better for the environment. They also make it more affordable for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

Why should I buy organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

What are organic fruits?

Organic foods do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They also contain more nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, E, and K, plus omega-3 fatty acids. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are free of harmful chemicals and sewage sludge.

Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.

According to the USDA, "organic" means that crops are raised in compliance with federal standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. However, they may use approved natural pest control methods, such as crop rotation and cover cropping, and animal feed made from organic materials.

A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. GMOs, artificial growthhormones, synthetic insecticides, and synthetic fertilizers cannot be used by farmers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. However, some farms won't claim that their products are 100% organic. This would confuse the consumers. They will instead label their product "made with organic ingredients." "

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products can be grown without synthetic fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. Organic products are those that do not contain chemicals or other additives. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. This term is often used to refer to foods that are not processed into final forms (such as fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types of food are tested for safety, quality, and purity. Organic produce has less pesticide residues and pollutant than conventionally grown food.

In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.

These products should not be consumed if you are pregnant. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
