What are the most popular organic products?
Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
However, they are also more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.
Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.
This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.
Are organic foods healthy?
There are two types, those we grow our own and those we purchase from another source. Of course, there are exceptions to both categories, but for the most part, the answer to your question is yes. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.
There are many supermarkets that sell organic food across North America and Europe. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.
Organic food has higher levels vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which makes it more delicious and nutritious. Organics are often grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This means that they do not pollute the soil and water sources.
Organic farming is regulated by the USDA. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to ensure safe eating. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.
As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms don't have the expense of expensive chemical inputs, such as insecticides and/or fungicides. They can charge lower prices.
According to the Environmental Working Group Organic food is actually 10 percent more expensive per pound than conventionally grown food. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.

The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.
Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.
Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.
The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.
While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.
Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
