Frequently Asked Questions

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

What is inorganic foods?

Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can be harmful for your health.

Organic food is produced naturally and without any harmful substances, such as chemical fertilizers or pesticides. These chemicals can cause harm to animals and humans.

Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.

Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the National Organic Program Standards all organic food must be free of banned materials such as antibiotics growth hormones genetically modified organisms GMOs, and industrial solvents. Additionally, organic food must be raised without toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers, sewage sludges, or ionizing radiation.

Why should I go organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. Make healthy food choices.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Always read the ingredient lists. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

How To

5 Reasons You Should Buy Organic Products

Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They are free from genetically modified organisms and irradiated substances. They are not made with sewage sludge, industrial solvents, or any other chemical substances. During the course of its growth cycle, the natural environment of the food is protected from contamination. It is free of preservatives as well as artificial additives. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. They are also made in conditions that maintain their nutritional value and freshness for longer times.

  1. Health benefits. Nonorganic produce is more chemically-laden than organic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. It also means you're consuming fewer toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizer requires very little water. Organic farms are typically located far away form areas of high pollution and where conventional growth is difficult because it requires so much effort. That helps reduce air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility, rather than chemical fertilisers. This results in healthier soils and higher levels organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. When farm animals eat only grasses and grains raised without any added hormones or antibiotics, they develop strong immune systems.
  4. Taste. Traditional fruits and vegetables are often bland due to the fact that they are picked at peak ripeness and shipped long distances for grocery stores. Because it was picked while still unripe, organic produce is richer and more flavorful.
  5. Nutrition. Many conventional processed foods contain harmful substances like BPA and GMOs. If you want to avoid these, stick to whole foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, beans, fruit, veggies, and herbs.
