Achieve Radiant Skin With Organic Food

Achieve Radiant Skin with Organic Food

Eating healthy is one of the best ways to achieve radiant skin. Organic foods have a range of benefits to your health that will translate to your complexion.

The antioxidant nutrients in colourful fruits and vegetables offer super-antioxidants that help to keep your skin glowing. Try adding berries to your smoothies and salads for a skin-soothing boost.

Avocado

Avocados are one of the yummiest healthy foods out there. Not only do they taste delicious spread on a piece of toast, mixed into a salad or in guacamole, but this exotic fruit is packed with all the vitamins and minerals you need to promote a glowing complexion. This includes folate, niacin, vitamin C, potassium and vitamin E, as well as healthy monounsaturated fats.

The skin benefits of consuming avocados include increased elasticity, smoother texture, and improved appearance of dark spots. Also, the lutein and zeaxanthin in avocados are known to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. For a great skin moisturizer, try mixing avocado oil with other oils and then using it on the body in place of a regular body lotion. It can also be used as a hot oil treatment for the scalp to help reduce dandruff and dry, flaky skin. It’s also free from bad cholesterol which makes it a heart-healthy food.

Berries

Whether they are used as face masks, or sprinkled over breakfast bowls, berries are packed with the antioxidants that make them essential to healthy and glowing skin. Adding a mix of different coloured berries into your diet helps to ensure that you are getting a good diversity of nutrients, as they all tend to contain slightly different benefits for the skin.

Goji berries are particularly beneficial for the skin as they are rich in amino acids and ellagic acid. Both of these help to rejuvenate the skin, improving its tone and colour. Their high levels of Vitamin C help to protect the skin from environmental toxins, and enhance its hydration.

A fruit that has the distinction of being both a vegetable and a berry is the tomato. Tomatoes have many of the same benefits as berries, such as Vitamin C, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and brighten dull skin. Try incorporating tomato into your beauty routine by using Johnson’s BB Cream or this replenishing bar soap, both of which contain red berry extracts to promote even complexion.

Green Tea

The green tea plant, Camellia sinensis, provides us with countless health and beauty benefits. Most famously known for its high concentration of antioxidants, it boosts energy levels, promotes heart and brain health, aids digestion, and more. It also makes a great natural toner and helps unclog pores, leaving skin looking clearer. The polyphenol EGCG in green tea also protects against sun damage.

Shieh adds that consuming or applying green tea can reduce signs of ageing, like fine lines and wrinkles, by rejuvenating dying skin cells and increasing collagen production. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory and is rich in amino acids that help strengthen the skin barrier and improve its hydration.

The best way to reap these benefits is by drinking green tea, however you can also incorporate it into your skincare routine. For example, supermodel Miranda Kerr often steams her face with brewed green tea leaves. Alternatively, mix it into a face mask or apply it to the skin using a cotton ball for a quick and easy natural facelift.

Dark Chocolate

Cocoa contains flavanols, which are able to reflect harmful UV rays and help protect the skin. Adding to that, this healthy treat also improves hydration levels and boosts blood flow. Its anti-inflammatory properties reduce symptoms of psoriasis and eczema and keep the skin looking smooth and glowing.

Dark chocolate increases the levels of 'pleasure hormones' in the brain, which results in a happier mood. It also helps fight stress which is one of the leading causes of collagen breakdown and wrinkles.

To achieve glowing and hydrated skin, consume dark chocolate regularly in small quantities. You can even use it as a face mask. For this, mix cocoa powder with a tablespoon of gram flour and lemon juice and apply it on the skin for 20-30 minutes. Then rinse it off. This will not only keep the skin hydrated but also lighten blemishes and scars. You can add milk or honey too for a softer and smoother complexion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

What is organic food?

Organic food is not produced with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food is grown naturally without harmful substances such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Inorganic food includes meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, grains, vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs.

Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. Organic farming, for example, uses natural methods and soil amendments in order to grow crops. Conventional farming, however, uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. The National Organic Program Standards state that organic food must be freed from banned substances like antibiotics, growthhormones, genetically altered organisms (GMOs) and industrial solvents. Organic food must not be produced with toxic chemicals, petroleum or sewage sludges or ionizing radioactive substances.

Why should you buy organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

How To

Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
