Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic foods?

Organic produce does not contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and sewage sludge. It is also grown without irradiation or genetic engineering. No growth hormones are used, and there is no animal testing. These crops can naturally grow, so no chemicals are used by farmers to combat pests or weeds.

Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. Organics have more nutrients than traditional food, which makes them better for our health. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.

Is organic meat more nutritious?

You probably know the answer if you have been paying attention for a while. Here's the problem: Organic food is becoming more sought-after, while traditional food continues to decline in popularity.

Organic foods are becoming more popular because they are better for us. Organic foods are also safer for our overall health and reduce pollution.

However, this coin has two sides. Organic produce takes longer and requires more resources. This means organic food will cost more than its non-organic counterpart.

Organic meats are generally more expensive than conventionally raised animals. But there are ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality.

One way to save money is to buy locally. Locally grown fruits and veggies help to lower prices because farmers get incentives to grow good crops.

Another way to cut costs is to look for deals. You may be able to get discounts when you buy organics.

Another way to save money? Eat less meat. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.

Organic food is healthier for the planet and our bodies than conventional food, but it's important to not overlook its cost.

What are the benefits to organic farming?

Organic farming offers farmers a method of growing food that doesn't require the use of chemicals. Farmers don't have worry about whether harmful pesticides are affecting their crops or animals.

Organic farming also offers more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers are good for plants that are healthy and reduce chemical waste.

Organic farming can also be environmentally friendly. Organic farming is also environmentally friendly. Farmers often use composting to recycle nutrients back into their soil. This reduces pollution and preserves valuable resources.

Organic farming is good for the environment and increases crop yields. Because organic farming uses less water during the growing season, this is why it is so successful.

Organic production methods mean farmers can get higher prices. Consumers who become more aware of the dangers of pesticides and chemical fertilizers demand healthier foods.

This drives up the demand for organic products. Organic farming is gaining popularity because of these reasons.

Which organic products are most in demand?

Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products will be the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.

These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.

According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

Is organic food good for you?

There are two types: foods that we grow and those that we purchase from others. There are exceptions, but the majority of the time, both options will be available. Organic food is healthier than conventional food because it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, pesticides or herbicides. It also doesn’t contain preservatives or genetically modified organisms.

In supermarkets all over North America, Europe Asia, Latin America, Latin America, and Africa, you can find organic food. Organic food can now be found in many grocery stores making it easier for shoppers to choose organic products.

Organic food is better tasting and healthier because it contains more vitamins and minerals. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices. They require farmers to follow strict guidelines so that organic produce can be eaten safely. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.

Organic food can often be cheaper than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms are free to charge less for their crops, as they don't need to pay expensive chemical inputs such insecticides orfungicides.

According to Environmental Working Group, organic food can be 10 percent cheaper per pound when compared to conventionally produced food. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.

Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. While many believe organic food can only come from specialty markets and fine dining restaurants, it is not true. You can easily purchase organic food in regular grocery stores throughout the United States.

The sales of organic food have increased dramatically in recent years. Organic food market value in the US increased from $21 billion to $43 billion in 2007 to reach $43 billion in 2012.

How To

Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural conditions and without the use of any artificial inputs like fungicides or herbicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require that operations are audited annually to verify compliance with the strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
