Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.
Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.
Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."
Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.
You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.
Does organic mean it is pesticide-free?
Organic food is chemical-free and grown without pesticides. This means organic food is free from pesticides and fertilizers.
Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) requires farmers to follow strict guidelines for growing crops certified as organic.
These guidelines include soil preparation and crop rotation, pest management, water conservation, as well as harvesting practices.
Organic farming methods are also beneficial for wildlife and natural habitats.
How can you tell whether food is organic?
Fresh ingredients are essential for any chef. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.
This is true for food as well. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. We also know that it didn't have any harmful chemicals.
Organic foods are produced without using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified organisms (GMO). These substances are not allowed for organic farmers.
Growing organic crops is an art. There are plenty of ways to grow them safely.
Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.
Organic farming practices include crop rotations and cover crops, manure composting, intercropping, and cover cropping. These techniques help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.
They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Because most people live in urban areas, it is easy to find farms that grow organic produce.
There are two types for organic products certification. The USDA National Organic Program certifies the one while the independent certifying agency certifies the other. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.
USDA seals or O Seals can be applied to organic products. This symbol indicates that the product meets federal requirements.

How To
Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.
For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.
While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
