Frequently Asked Questions

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

Are organic meats better?

This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. This is the crux of it: organic food has been growing in popularity while conventional food has fallen out of favor.

Organic foods are becoming more popular because they are better for us. Organic products are not only safer for our health but also reduce pollution and waste.

There are many sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer and requires more resources. Organic food is more expensive than non-organic.

Organic meats will typically be more expensive than those that are raised in conventional conditions. However, it is possible to reduce costs without compromising on quality.

Local purchases can help you save money. Locally grown fruits and veggies help to lower prices because farmers get incentives to grow good crops.

Another way to cut costs is to look for deals. There are often discounts offered when purchasing organics.

Finally, another way to save money is by eating less meat. Meat production can be costly due to the feed needed to raise livestock.

There are many reasons that organic food is better than regular food for our bodies, and also for the planet. However, it is important to remember the price.

How do I know if my produce is organic?

These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free Range – Produced from animals that live outdoors and graze on grasses or herbs.

Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are also richer in nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and omega-3 fat acids. Organic food is healthier for the environment and our bodies.

Organic foods are grown using sustainable farming practices that preserve soil quality and encourage biological diversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.

While most consumers associate organics with produce, many organic products include dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, personal care items, pet food, and household cleaning supplies.

"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.

All the above requirements are met by vegetables and fruits that are labeled "100% Organic". But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

How To

How to save money on organic meat

In this article, I will share my tips and tricks for buying organic meat without having to break the bank.

You will learn where to buy cheap organic meats, and what they cost per pound. You will learn how to make the best out of what you purchase.

Healthy eating doesn't require you to spend a lot. Sometimes, it takes a bit of creativity to save money while eating well. Here's my list of ways to keep your food costs down while enjoying organic meat's benefits.

  1. Buy at wholesale clubs - Costco and Sams Club are great places to shop for bulk foods like chicken breasts and pork chops. If you're lucky enough to live near one of these stores, you can often get deals on large quantities of meat (up to 50 pounds). This ensures that meat is not wasted. And if you buy it in bulk, you can freeze it, so it lasts longer.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. Amazon has Prime Pantry, a weekly sale that offers free shipping for orders over $35. There are discounts on roasts, ground beef and lamb steaks as well as pork loins. You can easily browse their website to see what is available at different times.
  3. Local farmers will usually be cheaper than big-box retailers since they don't pay large fees to stock their shelves. They know exactly what the animals ate and drank to ensure they are fully informed about what is in their bodies.
  4. Look for lean cuts of meat. Fatty meats are generally more expensive to cook. Therefore, choose the leanest cuts. The most commonly used cuts include flank steak, tenderloin and top round steaks. These cuts are high in protein and low in fat.
  5. Try new recipes. One of the easiest ways to reduce your grocery bill is to start cooking meals with ingredients you haven't used before. It's possible to create delicious meals with fresh tomatoes, onions and garlic using olive oil, spices, and garlic.
  6. You can be creative with leftovers. If you have leftover poultry or meat, you can use them to make sandwiches, soups and casseroles. Remaining meat can be used for quick lunches or dinners.

That's it! This is my list of tips to help you afford organic meat, even if your budget is tight. Are you able to offer any additional tips? Do you have any suggestions for me on where to find cheap meat?
