Which organic products are most in demand?

Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer and better for the environment. They also make it more affordable for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.

The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.

Is organic food healthy?

There are two types, those we grow our own and those we purchase from another source. There are exceptions, but the majority of the time, both options will be available. Organic food is healthier since it doesn't include any harmful chemicals.

You can find organic foods in supermarkets across North America. Organic food is now available in most grocery stores, making it easier to find organic foods.

Organic food has higher levels vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which makes it more delicious and nutritious. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.

Organic farming is regulated by the USDA. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to ensure safe eating. There are currently more than 30,000,000 acres of US farmland which have been designated organic.

Organic food is often more affordable than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms are able to charge lower prices for their crops because they don't have to purchase expensive chemical inputs like insecticides and fungicides.

In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, organic food costs 10 percent less per pound than conventionally produced food. Organic food is an option if you want to improve your health and the health of your family.

Organic food has become a popular alternative to standard American diets. Organic food is not only available in gourmet restaurants and specialty markets, as many people may believe. Organic food is readily available at regular grocery stores all across the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not always mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.

What is organic meat?

Organic meat refers to real food grown without the use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or hormones. This also means that animals weren't given any genetically modified feed. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.

Organic meats are better for the environment. Eating organic foods helps reduce pollution in the environment, such as rivers and lakes. Organic farmers don't use harmful chemicals to kill birds and insects, which helps wildlife.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local buying helps to keep money in the community, rather than moving out of state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.

What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?

Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. Organic products are those that do not contain chemicals or other additives. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are often more fresh than others, because they haven’t been processed with heat, radiation or chemical preservations. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types of food are tested for safety, quality, and purity. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores offer organic options. Organic meat, poultry or eggs can be found at most local markets. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections.
