Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of organic fruits?

Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods also have more nutrients such as vitamins C, E and K plus omega-3 fatty acid. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are grown with sustainable agricultural practices that help to preserve soil quality, and increase biological diversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.

Many organic products are not associated with produce. They include dairy and meat, poultry, eggs baked goods, pet food, household cleaning supplies, and personal care products.

The USDA defines organic as crops grown in accordance with strict federal regulations. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. They can use approved natural pest control methods such as crop rotation, cover cropping and organic animal feed.

A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.

All the above requirements are met by vegetables and fruits that are labeled "100% Organic". But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

Why is organic food so important?

For our health, organic produce is crucial. It's the best method to ensure you eat healthy foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.

Organic farming uses natural methods for growing crops without using harmful chemicals. This means fewer environmental pollutants, making it safer for humans and animals. You are helping the planet and yourself by choosing organic food.

But organic food offers more than just health benefits. We all know how bad processed food can make us feel. But did you know that most organic fruits and vegetables aren't treated with chemical spray either? It means that organic fruits and vegetables taste better, last longer, and are brighter.

Organic food is so important. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

Why should I choose organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.

What are organic products that can be used on the skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products don't contain artificial colours or fragrances.

They can also be used to maintain healthy skin, protect against premature aging, promote healing from injuries, and improve overall well-being.

These are some of the terms that you will see when you shop for organic products

  • Paraben Free: These are chemicals that keep certain cosmetic products stable. However, they can be toxic if used in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free – The product does not contain essential oils or perfumes.
  • Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients – The ingredient is naturally derived either from a plant or an animal.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian - the ingredients are either vegan or vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free - this means that gluten was removed from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic -- The product doesn’t contain toxic substances, carcinogens, harmful compounds, or any other dangerous chemicals that could pose a threat to your health.
  • Biodegradable means that the product can be thrown away as it will become harmless components.
  • Pesticide Free – There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
  • GMO-Free refers to the fact that no ingredients in the product contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic means that all the ingredients have been grown using methods that protect the soil and water as well as wildlife and farmers.

What is organic food?

Organic produce does not contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and sewage sludge. It is also grown without irradiation or genetic engineering. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can be grown naturally by farmers, and they don't need to be treated with chemicals to control pests or weeds.

Organic farming practices can also preserve soil quality by reducing erosion, and conserving water resources. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.

What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

Does organic mean that it is not sprayed with pesticides?

Organic food is free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This means that organic food is not exposed to pesticides or fertilizers.

Because it is free from harmful additives, organic produce has higher nutritional value than conventionally produced food.

The USDA National Organic Program, (NOP), requires farmers to adhere to strict guidelines when cultivating organic crops.

These guidelines cover soil preparation, crop rotation and pest control. They also include water conservation and harvesting techniques.

Organic farming methods are also beneficial for wildlife and natural habitats.

How To

5 Reasons Why You Should Buy Organic Products

Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They don't contain any genetically modified organisms or irradiated foods. Their production does not use sewage sludge and industrial solvents. During its growing cycle, the food's natural environment will be protected from contamination. It is free of artificial preservatives and additives. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics. In addition, they are produced under conditions that allow them to retain their nutritional value and freshness for longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals than nonorganic. This means it's less likely to cause allergies and sensitivities. You also consume fewer toxic substances and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organic produce is low in water consumption. Organic farms are located far from cities where there is a lot of pollution, because they require so much energy to grow. That helps reduce air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. It is better for soil health to rotate crops and allow the land to fallow regularly. Farm animals develop strong immune systems when they eat only grasses/grains raised without adding hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Because it was picked while still unripe, organic produce is richer and more flavorful.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs, BPA, and other harmful chemicals are often found in conventional processed foods. Avoid these harmful chemicals by eating whole foods, such as meat, eggs and fish, seeds, legumes, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and beans.
