Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.

The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.


Is organic food healthy?

There are two types, those we grow our own and those we purchase from another source. While there are exceptions, the general answer is yes to both. Organic food is healthier as it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals or pesticides, herbicides and preservatives.

There are many supermarkets that sell organic food across North America and Europe. Many grocery stores now sell organic food. This makes it easier for customers to select organic products.

Organic food is also better tasting and more nutritious because it contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Organics can be grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This ensures that organics do not pollute our soil or water supply.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices. They require farmers to follow strict guidelines so that organic produce can be eaten safely. There are over 30 million acres of US organic farmland.

5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products

Organic foods are grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They don't contain any genetically modified organisms or irradiated foods. They are not made with sewage sludge, industrial solvents, or any other chemical substances. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It does not contain artificial preservatives or additives. There is no use of antibiotics or hormones. They are also produced in conditions that enable them to preserve their nutritional value, freshness, and quality for longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals that nonorganic. This means that it is less likely to cause allergies. This means you're also consuming less toxic and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Organic farms are located far from cities where there is a lot of pollution, because they require so much energy to grow. This reduces air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies more on soil fertility than chemical fertilizers. This results is healthier soils with higher organic matter.
