Frequently Asked Questions
Is organic the same as pesticide-free?
Organic food is naturally chemical-free and grows without pesticides. This means that organic food is often free of pesticides and fertilizers.
Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) requires farmers to follow strict guidelines for growing crops certified as organic.
These guidelines address soil preparation, crop rotations, pest control, water conservation, harvesting, and other practices.
Organic farming also promotes healthy ecosystems which are beneficial to wildlife and natural habitats.
Do organic foods offer health benefits?
Organic foods may not be healthy for everyone. They can be beneficial for your health if you eat them often.
Organic food is free from artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides as well as hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Organic produce is free from harmful chemicals that could cause harm to human health.
Additionally, organic products are less likely to contain additives during processing. You're more likely to eat organic products than you are non-organic.
Studies show that organic foods contain more nutrients and antioxidants than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.
While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming increases soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps to prevent erosion and conserve water resources. Organic farms require less fuel and energy because they don't contain toxic chemicals.
People worry that organic foods will be more expensive than those made from conventional food. However, prices can vary depending upon where you live. For example, organic apples are generally more expensive than conventional apples.
But, if we look at the total cost of a combination of both types and fruits, we'll see organic is much cheaper.
Do you really need to buy organic?
It all depends on who you are. If organic food doesn't appeal to you, you shouldn't bother.
Organic food can be purchased if you like good-tasting food. Organic food is safer because organic produce is not grown by commercial growers who use pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Organic agriculture helps to protect the environment by conserving natural resources, and promoting biodiversity.
What should I look out for when buying organic products?
Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.
It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.
When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
Are organic foods better for us?
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.
Statistics
- According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
- Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To
Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).
In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.
Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require that operations are audited annually to verify compliance with the strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. This represents a 23-percent increase over 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.
Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
