The combination of herbaceous basil, buttery pine nuts and salty Parmesan cheese makes pesto sauce a really flavorful condiment that elevates any dish.

Make It Your Own

The secret to any pesto is a perfect balance of herbs, cheese and nuts (typically pine nuts or Parmesan) and oil. The combination makes it easy to whirl together in the food processor and add to soups, pasta or grilled vegetables.

Basil is the classic choice, but don't be afraid to try other leafy greens such as mint, cilantro and tarragon. You can also swap out the pine nuts for other types of nuts, like walnuts, almonds or pistachios. And for a vegan version, leave out the Parmesan and use nutritional yeast instead.

Herb pesto will keep in the fridge for a week or longer, though it may lose its bright green color as the surface becomes exposed to air. You can prevent this from happening by pressing a layer of plastic wrap against the top of the container.

Herb pesto is a versatile sauce that can be used in a wide variety of recipes. It's great stirred into pasta or zoodle dishes, spread on a sandwich, added to soups and more.
