You can save your seeded paper bookmarks by planting them in the ground. They will grow into plants or flowers! This project is great fun and makes an excellent gift. You can make many bookmarks with one batch, so keep some for yourself!

What You'll Need

  • 8 jumbo craft sticks
  • 12"x12” piece of window screen or Cheesecloth
  • White craft glue
  • Black electrical tape
  • Plain white copy or art paper
  • Water
  • Blender
  • 13" x 9" baking pan
  • Herb and flower seeds
  • Dry herbs to match seeds
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Two vintage kitchen towels
  • Hemp cord
  • Spoon
  • Sponge
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch

Useful tip:

All safe, compostable materials include copy paper, construction papers, and even newspaper. Avoid glossy magazines and other glossy papers. Your seeded paper will be beautiful with flower seeds, herb seeds, dried plants, and even flowers petals. These bookmarks are easy to plant! Simply tear the bookmarks into pieces and place them in the ground. Hemp can also be grown naturally, so you don't need to take it out. You can also use extra seeded papers to cut into pieces. Then, you can wet a paper towel and place the seeded papers and paper towel in a ziplock sandwich bag. Let the seeds sprout!

How to make

For the frame of the screen, glue the corners of four jumbo craft sticks together. Next, lay the cheesecloth or screen over the frame to completely cover it. (See photo.)

Glue a second layer craft sticks to the frames on opposite sides. Secure the cheesecloth between the top and bottom layers. Cut the ends of the remaining craft sticks, and glue them along the frames' remaining sides. As you glue the sticks, make sure that the cheesecloth is pulled tight. Let dry. (See photo.)


Trim the edges and leave a little cheesecloth hanging above the ends. Cover the craft stick frame with black electrical tape. Tuck the cheesecloth underneath the tape. This step is essential to protect your craft sticks from water. (See photo.)


Cut pieces of paper into small squares, about 1-2 inches in width. Place the squares in a blender and cover them with warm water. Blend until you get a fine paste.



Warm water should be added halfway to a 13x9 baking sheet. Place the paper paste made in the blender into the saucepan. Mix gently. Add flower seeds and small pieces of hemp cord cut into ribbons to make flower bookmarks. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon. Use colored paper or construction paper to make herb bookmarks. Add herbs seeds like chamomile, calendula or lemon basil, greek olivegano, greek oregano or dill and sprinkle with some dried herb. Stir. (See photo.)

A kitchen towel can be placed on the counter. You may also need a sponge or another towel.

The mixture will be absorbed by your screen frame. To get a uniform layer of pulp on the screen, move the frame around as if you were panning for gold. Let the excess water drip off and lift straight up from the water.

Place the screen on the towel and carefully carry it to the counter. Flip the screen upside down, place the second kitchen towel on top and then put it back on the counter. Now, take off the towel.

You can use a kitchen sponge or a kitchen towel to press down on the screen, removing as much water as possible.

Gently lift the frame and loosen the seeded papers. You might need to clean the edges of your frame. However, you should be able to get the corner out by gently coaxing it. The rest should come off easily. Continue this process until you have used all of the pulp.

To dry your seeded papers, lace them onto a wire rack. To speed up drying, place the paper under a lamp if it is too humid.

The paper can curl if this is done. To flatten the paper, wrap a kitchen towel around them. You can leave them like this for several hours.

Each sheet should be cut into three pieces. For a straight edge, you can either cut the sheets or place a ruler onto the paper. Then gently tear the paper. This will give you a natural edge.



To make a hole approximately 3/4" from the top, use a hole punch. Through the hole, thread a string of hemp cord or ribbon, or even raffia. Trim the ends and tie the cord.

Bookmarks

These bookmarks are easy to plant! Simply tear the bookmarks into pieces and place them in the ground. Hemp can also be grown naturally, so you don't need to take it out. You can also use extra seeded papers to cut into pieces. Then, you can wet a paper towel and place the seeded papers and paper towel in a ziplock sandwich bag. Let the seeds sprout!
